An early Wednesday crash on Highway 214 near Silver Falls left an 18-year-old Salem driver dead after the Subaru WRX he was in veered off the road, slammed into a tree, rolled down an embankment and burst into flames. The driver was pronounced dead at the scene, and a 24-year-old passenger was airlifted to a nearby hospital with serious injuries. Troopers shut down the highway for hours while investigators and emergency crews worked the wreckage in the dark.
State police outline the scene
According to the Oregon State Police, troopers were called out at 1:52 a.m. Wednesday for a single-vehicle crash on Highway 214 near milepost 22. A preliminary investigation found that a Subaru WRX driven by 18-year-old Adrian Ramos Monroy of Salem left the roadway, hit a tree, continued down an embankment, came to rest and then caught fire.
OSP said Ramos Monroy died at the scene. A passenger, 24-year-old Hallyenangel Marie Hance Route of Salem, was flown by Life Flight to an area hospital with serious injuries. Drakes Crossing Fire Department and the Oregon Department of Transportation assisted at the crash site.
