Howie Day @ The State Room 6/4
From small beginnings in Brewer, Maine, to millions of listeners online and fans in the crowd, Howie Day brings his countrywide tour to Salt Lake City on June 4. Beginning in the late 1990s with a demo EP, Day self-produced his debut album Australia in 2000, followed in 2003 by his highly-credited record Stop All The World Now. His sound is reminiscent of the 2000s Weezer, Coldplay and Plain White T’s era, with an emotional, acoustic influence at the forefront. Listening to his discography, each track would pair well with a coming-of-age film as the protagonist is at their lowest, walking toward an endless road as the lights fade to darkness, especially well-known tracks like “Collide” and “She Says.” Day’s music also sounds like the early days of autumn, as the leaves begin to fall and the world becomes quiet, his voice becomes the only thing carrying you through long walks on cloudy days and drives through the canyon alone. Day is well-known for his live sound and performing with guitar pedals in front of him and samplers to accompany his solo acts. It has become an entire production and touring now, almost 30 years into his career, it’s sure to be a nostalgic event and an evening of tears. Doors at 7 p.m., show at 8 p.m. and tickets are $46. You can find your tickets now at thestateroompresents.com. You must be 21+ for entry. (Laney Hansen)
Missionaire @ The Depot 6/7
This weekend, Salt Lake City will be full of rainbows, love, music and lots of fun. It’s officially Utah Pride, and you can close out the final night with the event THE MOMENT AT THE DEPOT: Brat Anniversary Pride Afterparty. A special artist, Missionaire, will play global dance music to keep the party going. The Greek DJ and electronic music producer is known for their blend of Afro and Melodic House and plays raw, pure analog sets with energetic performances paired with vibrant, vocal-driven and highly hypnotic grooves. For example, the track “Closer” is smooth, vocal-heavy Afro House sound, while “Fly Solo” is a more modern Afro House sound that is both uplifting and groovy. Missionaire’s original mix of “Whisper” is bouncier, whereas the original mix of “Reputation” is ethereal and more of a deep house song with African-inspired drums. Then, of course, his well-known remix of Alicia Keys’ “No One” reimagines the classic R&B vocals over rhythmic, Afro House beats perfect for the dance floor. Atmospheric and emotional melodic sounds with the signature percussive elements of Afro House that are consistent with Missionaire’s sets will keep the good vibes and party going! After Pride, pull up to The Depot on Sunday, June 7 at 8 p.m. Early Bird General Admissions costs $18 while Tier 2 costs $24. Prices will continue to increase as it gets closer to the event. You can purchase yours at ticketmaster.com. (Arica Roberts)
