Three people who admitted to holding, drugging, and assaulting a woman in a Salt Lake City apartment in April 2022 walked away from potential prison time in mid-May with suspended sentences, short county jail terms, and years of probation instead. The judge also ordered no-contact rules, random drug testing, and a strict ban on alcohol and illegal drugs. The case drew extra attention because two young children were reportedly in the apartment while the attack unfolded.
Sentences and plea deals
Third District Judge Barry Lawrence handed down the sentences on May 14. Sergio Octavio Reynoso, 38, of Murray, received a prison term of one to 15 years, but it was suspended in favor of one year in the county jail and four years of probation. Ryan James Crowther, 33, was given a five-year-to-life sentence that was likewise suspended for one year in jail and five years of probation. Randee Krukowski, 33, got a suspended one-to-15-year term with a year in jail and four years of probation.
All three were ordered to stay away from the victim and to submit to random drug testing, according to Univision.
How prosecutors say it unfolded
Prosecutors say a 22-year-old woman went to a West Temple apartment on April 10, 2022, where two children under 10 were present. Inside, she was threatened with a handgun, forced to take Xanax, and then sexually assaulted while drifting in and out of consciousness, according to charging documents. After the assault, the woman called 911 and was treated for severe injuries. Police later served a search warrant on the apartment and reported finding drugs and drug paraphernalia, details that appeared in local coverage and court filings.
Plea deals and dismissed counts
The three defendants pleaded guilty early this year in deals that cleared away a stack of original felony charges. Prosecutors said Reynoso pleaded guilty on January 28 to forcible sexual abuse. Crowther entered a guilty plea to rape, and Krukowski admitted to aggravated assault.
