Mother jailed for putting out cigarette on 4-year-old child’s head

WEST JORDAN, Utah (ABC4) — A West Jordan mother has been arrested for child abuse after she allegedly injured her 4-year-old child with a lit cigarette.

Amanda Margaret Newsome, 31, is facing one count of intentional or knowing aggravated child abuse, a first-degree felony. She has yet to be formally charged.

According to the arrest statement, on June 18, the Utah Division of Child and Family Services (DCFS) referred a child abuse and neglect report to the West Jordan Police Department.

DCFS was initially contacted by an employee at a Kearns preschool, who told the caseworker that a 4-year-old child had come to the preschool with a “circular abrasion” on their forehead. When they asked what happened, the victim told them that their mother “put a cigarette out on [their] forehead” because the victim was “on papa’s truck.”…
