ICE appears to pursue county jail space for detainees rather than use Salt Lake facility

SALT LAKE CITY (KUTV) — Federal immigration officials may be reconsidering their strategy for detention facilities, opting to use existing county spaces instead of the Salt Lake warehouse.

Officials with the Department of Homeland Security told KUTV they are working with counties to use existing detention space after reports surfaced of plans to sell a Salt Lake warehouse.

“From day one, DHS has remained singularly focused on removing the worst of the worst criminal illegal aliens from the United States and is always evaluating the best methods to do so,” a DHS spokesperson said. “DHS is moving swiftly to utilize EXISTING detention space with our state and county partners.”
