Utah Weather: Isolated thunderstorms and critical fire danger spread

SALT LAKE CITY (ABC4) — Happy Wednesday, Utah! Our Wednesday afternoon will feature hazy, smoky, and sunshine across northern Utah.

Today’s weather: Mid to upper 90s

Showers across southern Utah will spread north through the evening, bringing a chance for scattered severe storms to northern Utah. The air at the surface will be very dry, but several mainly “dry thunderstorms” will develop across Utah.

These storms will likely produce more in the way of damaging winds and lightning as opposed to actual big rainfall. High temperatures will warm into the mid to upper 90s across the Wasatch Front, with highs holding into the upper 90s across southwest Utah.

Due to the threat of dry lightning and gusty winds, a Red Flag Warning has been issued for most of Utah for Wednesday afternoon through Wednesday evening.

The Storm Prediction Center has placed all of Utah under a “Marginal risk” for a severe storm or two. Areas between I-80 and I-70 in northern Utah have been placed in a “Slight risk” or level 2/5 for scattered severe wind gust potential. Keep an eye on the sky and on radar throughout the evening hours. Be ready to seek shelter if one of these storms approaches your neighborhood.

Tomorrow’s weather: Moisture across the state

We will still be tracking a bit of moisture across the state on Thursday. This will bring another chance for a few isolated strong thunderstorms to the eastern half of Utah by Thursday afternoon…
