SALT LAKE CITY (ABC4) — It has now been 31 years since six-year-old Rosie Tapia was kidnapped from her Salt Lake City home and was killed. Her family is still searching for answers, despite a lack of leads.
On August 13, 1995, around 2:00 a.m., Lewine Tapia checked in on six-year-old Rosa “Rosie” Tapia and her siblings in their shared bathroom in the Salt Lake City residence. However, just hours later, Rosie was discovered missing from the bedroom.
Later that day, Rosie’s body was found in a canal near 900 South and 1600 West with evidence of her being sexually assaulted. For over three decades, Lewine and others have not given up hope that Rosie’s killer will be found, with hopes that someone, somewhere, knows something.
“I try to remember her how she was,” says Lewine, Rosie’s mother. She added that her granddaughter reminds her of Rosie. “Sometimes, when she smiles, she looks like Rosie. It feels like Rosie is in her.”
