Rising national debt could mean higher borrowing costs for Americans

SALT LAKE CITY (KUTV) — The U.S. national debt has surpassed $40 trillion, a figure that works out to roughly $116,000 for every person in the country, according to Robert Spendlove, a senior economist at Zions Bank.

The total is difficult to grasp on its own, but the nation’s debt-to-gross domestic product ratio offers a better measure of the challenge. The ratio is the highest it has been since World War II.
