‘Canned with Care’: Salt Lake city event helps families save on groceries through canning

SALT LAKE CITY (ABC4) — With grocery prices on the rise, Salt Lake City council leaders are offering residents an opportunity to learn money-saving food preservation techniques.

Salt Lake City Council Members Victoria Petro, Alejandro “Ale” Puy, and Chris Wharton joined the community to attend “Canned with Care,” a free, hands-on event designed to teach families how to safely preserve food and make the most of their grocery purchases.

“One of the reasons the Council funded this is to help community members in the economic times that we are in. We know that the economy has been slowing down, we know that there have been a lot of cuts to different programs, so we wanted to provide this community education event to help with affordability,” Wharton said.

The canning process involves placing foods in jars or cans and heating them to a temperature that destroys microorganisms that could be a health hazard or cause the food to spoil. Experts say it is very important to get the temperatures of the food and the process correct to prevent it from getting spoilt.

“It is actually kind of easy to accidently incubate botulism and we want to make sure you don’t do that,” Prof. Melanie Jewkes, USU Extension in Salt lake city said, “We want to make sure that the food you are spending time to make and preserve is safe for you to eat, consume and share. It is important to seal it properly to make sure it has a longer shelf life.”…
