The Southern California donut shop, JD Flannel Donuts & Coffee, recently opened its second location in Salt Lake City, in the East Bench area. The shop offers a variety of specialty, classic and seasonal donuts, all made fresh in the shop throughout the day.
“We make everything from scratch, by hand and just in time. So it’s a different type of pastry or donut than a normal corner donut shop that makes it from a mix or makes it early in the morning and sells it throughout the day,” said a co-owner, Dave Rhode.
Origins of JD Flannel
Rhode says he and his best friend, John Miller, started the shop about eight years ago, after they caught the idea on a fishing trip.
“John and I grew up together. We’ve been friends for over 45 years. We were both in the corporate life, him in finance and me in sales. And then in 2017, we were out fishing in Montana. Our kids were getting older, and we just started brainstorming on a business we could do together,” Rhode said. “It started with this thought of, gosh, what can we do to really serve people in a genuine way — the way they did a 100 years ago?”…
