Smoky building shuts down busy block of downtown Salt Lake City

On a busy Saturday night, part of downtown Salt Lake City was closed off due to a reports of a fire. However, what was thought to be a fire, turned out to be mostly smoke.

According to Capt. Shaun Mumedy from Salt Lake City Fire, crews were dispatched around 9:30 p.m. to reports of smoke that could be seen from the first and second floors of a commercial building in the area of 200 South State Street.

Once crews were on scene, they did not locate any visible flames, or anything that would constitute danger, with firefighters engaging primarily in smoke removal. No injuries nor evacuations were reported.

The sizable response from fire crews caused State Street to be closed in both directions for quite some time. However, Capt. Mumedy tells FOX 13 News the response was largely precautionary due to the size and location of the building.

By 10:30 p.m., crews were released from the scene, with traffic resuming its normal flow.
