SLCPD enhances presence along Jordan River Trail to combat criminal activity

SALT LAKE CITY ( ABC4 ) — After two men were arrested on suspicion of purchasing illegal drugs along the Jordan River Trail, the Salt Lake City Police Department said they are continuing “enhanced efforts” to reduce criminal activity in the area.

On Tuesday, officers with the SLCPD Bike Squad watched as a car pulled into the parking lot of Constitution Park, located at 1300 W 300 N. People looking to illegally buy or sell drugs will often come to the park and walk to the Jordan River Trail to engage in drug interactions, police said.

Two men reportedly got out of their car, walked to the trail, and got back in their car. When police contacted the men inside of their car, they said they saw drug paraphernalia, more than $700 in cash, and “several blue M30 pills,” known to contain fentanyl.

The men, identified as Robert Rearick, 37, and Jesus Chavez, 28, were booked into the Salt Lake County Metro Jail on the offense of unlawfully distributing, offering, or arranging the distribution of a controlled substance. Because the offense took place at a park, police said the charge was enhanced to a felony.
