Alta To Host Annual Groundhog Day Race On February 2nd

On February 2, 2024, Alta will be hosting the Curt & Adam Naisbitt Memorial Groundhog Day Race. With categories for both alpine and telemark skiers, the Groundhog Day race is a fun way to celebrate a funny holiday on the slopes.

Groundhog Day is observed every year on February 2nd. Legend has it that, on this day, the groundhog emerges from his winter burrow and looks for its shadow. If the groundhog sees its shadow, it will return to its den and winter will continue for 6 weeks. If the groundhog does not see its shadow, spring will arrive early. In the world of skiing, we definitely hope that the groundhog will not see its shadow so winter cna continue as long as possible.

What better way to celebrate the trajectory of the winter than by racing downhill with your friends? Here’s the schedule for the 2024 Groundhog Day Race:

Friday, February 2nd, 2024

Where: Sunnyside Race Arena

9:15 a.m. – 12:00 p.m. Course open for preliminary races. Top 16 racers in each category advance to afternoon races.
