Police arrest mail truck carjacking suspect in ‘chaotic’ and ‘dangerous’ scene

SALT LAKE CITY ( ABC4 ) — A man was taken into custody after he allegedly stole a mail truck, endangered several civilians, rammed into a patrol vehicle, and barricaded himself in the postal truck for 30 minutes with a knife.

Centerville Police Chief Paul Child described the scene as “chaotic” after they tracked down the suspect of a mail truck carjacking in Bountiful.

Child said the alleged carjacking took place in Salt Lake City when a man, whose identity has yet to be released, threatened a postal service employee with a knife around 1 p.m. on Monday, taking their vehicle.

As the suspect drove toward Bountiful, police say he side-swiped a car and drove through a crowded parking lot with people jumping out of his way. He also allegedly endangered one civilian who was following him in a vehicle and informing police of the suspect’s location.

Police say they encountered the suspect at the top of 500 West Porter Lane, a dead end, where he drove around them. They say he attempted to run over an officer and escape until he was blocked by a police car which he crashed into. Authorities then boxed him in, and he allegedly proceeded to ram the patrol car in an attempt to escape.
