SALT LAKE CITY ( ABC4 ) — The man accused of carjacking a postal truck at the beginning of February and causing multiple car accidents is being charged with federal crimes, according to the Department of Justice.
According to the DOJ, Wilber Castellanos Hernandez, 32, is being charged with carjacking, mail theft and theft of government property; his initial court appearance has been scheduled for February 15.

Court documents revealed that Hernandez allegedly stole a United States Postal Service mail truck on Feb. 5, after reportedly breaking into other vehicles and checking their door handles in the surrounding area.
When officers arrived on the scene, witnesses and a USPS employee informed them that Hernandez had stolen the mail truck, according to the DOJ press release. The postal worker informed officers that Hernandez had threatened him and other witnesses with a knife, according to the DOJ.
Hernandez was able to start the mail truck with keys that had been left in the vehicle, according to the DOJ, before he fled the area in the mail truck. The truck was able to be tracked by postal employees with GPS technology, according to the release form the DOJ.
