UHP Is Giving Out Fewer Speeding Tickets

(Salt Lake City, UT) – The Utah Highway Patrol says it is stopping fewer speeders thanks to a state law passed in 2022. The number of citations for excessive speeding is dropping annually. The Legislature passed a law in 2022 to help police get a handle on drivers who speed – a problem that worsened during the COVID-19 pandemic. The new law increased fines for drivers caught going over 100 mph. It also made driving reckless at speeds of 105 mph or more a class B misdemeanor. From 2022 to 2023, the number of citations for some speeders dropped by nearly 29-percent.
