Elk return to grassy medians, prompt closure of I-80 at mouth of Parleys Canyon

SALT LAKE CITY (KUTV) — The Utah Division of Wildlife Resources is cautioning drivers on I-80, I-215 East, and Foothill Drive — specifically where the three converge at the mouth of Parleys Canyon at the Salt Lake City-Millcreek border. It’s a hotspot for elk.

A herd of elk was seen grazing on the grassy medians between the busy highways on Monday, at times moving across highway lanes. Ultimately, I-215 and I-80 were closed down in the area as the Utah Highway Patrol with help from a biologist moved the herd back toward the canyon.

DWR Conservation Outreach Manager Mike Packer said the call came in at about 9:45 a.m. that a herd of approximately 30 elk had arrived at I-80 and Foothill Drive. A half hour later, authorities shut down both I-80 and I-15 to safely funnel the elk back toward the mountains and away from traffic.

By 10:25 a.m., the elk were safely across the highways with no injuries…
