FARMINGTON, Utah (ABC4) — The Davis County Sheriff’s Office is warning residents of a new scam targeting family members of inmates who are incarcerated at the Davis County Jail.
According to the Sheriff’s Office, scammers call family members and falsely claim that their loved one is eligible for an early release. Scammers claim the early release would be through an “Ankle Monitor Program,” but only if the family pays a hefty fee. Typically, that fee is often requested to be paid in Bitcoin, a type of cryptocurrency.
