Target shooters accused of ignoring warnings, triggering dangerous wildfires

SALT LAKE CITY (KUTV) — It’s a warning that not enough people are following, according to fire safety experts. Too many people are shooting their firearms in dangerous places, sparking fires. Fire experts say they keep warning people about the dangers of gunfire and explosives during the dry weather, but too many people are ignoring them.

This weekend, multiple RVs were destroyed in a fire near a gun range in Salt Lake City, and investigators are reportedly looking into an incident in Utah County where someone used Tannerite, an explosive device, as part of a gender reveal party.

Safety experts say Tooele and Utah counties seem to be the hotbed for firearm and explosive-caused fires. By this date last year, there were 24 of these kinds of fires all across Utah. This year, however, fire fighters have responded to more starts in just those two counties, alone.
