Farmington man sentenced after embezzling over $1.7M from small business job

SALT LAKE CITY (ABC4) — A man from Farmington, Utah was sentenced Thursday to prison and is required to repay money after he admitted to embezzling over a million dollars from his small business job.

Timothy Sean Edgar, 44, pleaded guilty to federal charges of wire fraud and money laundering. Judge Howard C. Nelson, Jr. sentenced Edgar to 18 months in prison, to three years of supervised release, and to pay back $1,778,251 to the victim, the U.S. Attorney’s Office District of Utah announced Thursday.

Edgar admitted to creating a years-long scheme to steal roughly $1.7 million from his employer, a small business in Utah, from 2021 to October 2024.

He worked in sales at the company. Using that position, he fraudulently opened a new sales channel through an online marketplace, accessed the vendor portal, and redirected automated clearing house payments to his personal bank account.
