Man arrested for alleged robbery, child kidnapping after mother briefly leaves vehicle running with infant in car seat

SALT LAKE CITY, Utah, Aug. 9, 2025 (Gephardt Daily) — A 23-year-old man was arrested early Saturday after he allegedly stole a vehicle with an infant inside on Thursday, then the next day reportedly used credit cards he found in the vehicle.

Carlos Daniel Castellanos was arrested for investigation of the alleged crimes of:

  • Child kidnapping, a first-degree felony
  • Theft/receiving an item valued at greater than $5,000, a second-degree felony
  • Robbery, a second-degree felony
  • Unlawfully acquire a financial card, a third-degree felony
  • Possession of a controlled substance schedule I/II/analog, a class A misdemeanor
  • Unlawful use of financial card for less than $500, a class B misdemeanor
  • Possession of controlled substances marijuana/spice, a class B misdemeanor

Castellano’s arrest document says that just before 11 a.m. Thursday, a mother stepped away from her parked but running vehicle.

A man, later identified as Castellanos, had been skateboarding in the Gateway Mall parking garage and was told by Gateway security to leave, says his arrest document, filed by an officer of the Salt Lake City Police Department…
