Deceased Snowboarder at Perisher, Australia, Identified as Salt Lake City EMT & Pre-Med Student

The snowboarder who died following an accident in the Front Valley terrain park at Perisher, Australia, on Tuesday, August 12, has been identified as U.S. citizen Drew Youngquist.

According to a statement from Perisher Resort, emergency crews were called to the terrain park at around 2:30 p.m. on Tuesday. Perisher Ski Patrol, NSW Ambulance, and NSW Police all responded, but despite their best efforts, the 22-year-old Utah resident was pronounced dead at the scene.

Youngquist had been working in Australia since June with outdoor education company Action Learning Initiatives in Jindabyne—just 30 minutes from Perisher. He had dedicated his life to helping others, with experience as an EMT and first responder, ambulance driver, respite provider, and ski patroller.

A Salt Lake City native, Youngquist grew up skiing at Snowbasin. Last U.S. winter, he worked as ski patrol and medical staff at Utah Olympic Park. He was set to graduate this year from the University of Utah with a Bachelor of Science (Honors) in Emergency Medical Services, specializing in Wilderness Technical Rescue, and planned to become a medical doctor…
