Salt Lake City, UT – A Utah mother has been arrested after allegedly torturing her 4-month-old daughter, causing severe burns, bone fractures, and a brain bleed, authorities report. The shocking case has raised alarms about infant safety and domestic abuse.
Arrest and Charges
Lizbeth Hurtado-Breton, 36, was taken into custody on Tuesday and charged with child torture and aggravated child abuse. She remains in the Salt Lake County Jail pending further investigation. Her husband, whose name has not been released, reported the baby’s injuries to authorities.
Injuries Reported by Medical Staff
The infant was brought to Primary Children’s Hospital with severe burns on her face. Medical personnel also identified multiple bone fractures, a brain bleed, and injuries in various stages of healing. Hospital staff alerted the police after noticing the extent and pattern of the injuries.
Alleged Abuse Methods
Police reports and court documents detail the alleged abuse:
- The mother reportedly attempted a home remedy, holding the infant over a steaming pot, resulting in burns.
- Hurtado-Breton allegedly rubbed the baby’s face with a napkin, which reportedly wiped off skin.
- The baby’s mouth was taped shut, reportedly to stop crying.
- Arms were allegedly taped behind the infant’s back during feedings, and she was force-fed, causing choking episodes.
The father reportedly provided video and photographic evidence of the alleged abuse.
Possible Motive
According to police, the father claimed Hurtado-Breton wished the baby had been a boy and treated the infant differently than older siblings.
When questioned, Hurtado-Breton allegedly said her hands felt “very hot” during the steaming, but she did not consider the impact on the baby. She also said taping the mouth to hold a pacifier was the “easiest” option. Regarding other injuries, she reportedly said she couldn’t remember.
Legal Proceedings
Hurtado-Breton faces serious charges of child torture and aggravated child abuse. Police investigations continue, and the community is urged to report any suspected child abuse to authorities immediately.
