Former addict calls for stricter regulation of ‘gas station heroin’ in Utah

SALT LAKE CITY (KUTV) — It was just a free sample from a gas station drive-thru in Ogden, but for Dustin Hawkins, it set off a relapse he never saw coming.

“I crack it like an idiot and just drink it,” said Hawkins, who had been sober from opiates for seven years before trying kratom, a controversial herbal substance now widely sold in gas stations across Utah.
