Detectives revive 54-year-old homicide case of two people at Salt Lake market

SALT LAKE CITY (KUTV) — Families of the two victims in a 1971 shooting renewed their pleas for information that could help solve the 54-year-old cold case.

Both Michael Bown, 23, and Carolyn Kingston, 33, were shot and killed around 2:00 p.m. on Sept. 2, 1971, at Natters’ Market near 3000 South and 700 East in Salt Lake.

Detective Ben Pender said Kingston was working as a cashier when a suspect entered the store and attempted to rob the store. During the robbery, Bown interrupted the robbery attempt and was shot and killed by the suspect…
