LDS Church moving forward with plan to demo Plaza Hotel for Downtown parking lot

Parts of the Plaza Hotel in Downtown Salt Lake City could soon start to be torn down, as part of a larger effort to raze the entire hotel and make way for a surface parking lot near Temple Square that likely isn’t allowed by city ordinance.

Last week, Salt Lake City received a demolition permit in the hopes of tearing down the hotel’s canopy and adjacent parking garage, along with the former site of JB’s Restaurant, which is connected to the hotel complex.

The applicant for the demolition permit is Grant Mackay Company, a Utah-based demolition company that does large-scale demolitions. The parking garage is located at 102 W. South Temple to the west of the hotel itself, while the old restaurant is located east of the hotel at 122 W. South Temple…
