Snow brings wet, slushy conditions to Upper Cottonwoods, forcing traction law restrictions

SALT LAKE CITY (KUTV) — Traction law restrictions were implemented for both Big and Little Cottonwood Canyon on Friday morning after Utah’s New Year’s storm brought wet and slushy conditions to the highways.

Ski Utah issued its first “Utah Powder Day” of 2026 as the Alta Ski Area, the Brighton Ski Resort, and Solitude all reported 13 inches of new snow in the last 24 hours. The newest blanket of fresh snow brought the base total for each ski area to at least 40 inches.

However, the Utah Department of Transportation is warning skiers eager to take advantage of the new snow to travel with caution to Cottonwood resorts…
