2 caught in backcountry avalanche near Brighton Resort

SALT LAKE CITY (ABC4) — Two people were caught in an avalanche in the backcountry just off of Brighton Resort on Saturday, according to the Utah Avalanche Center (UAC).

Local personnel spotted the avalanche early Saturday afternoon, Jan. 3, while investigating another skier-triggered slide in Hidden Canyon from Friday, officials said. While little is known about Saturday’s avalanche, personnel found two burial holes, one of which contained blood.

“It’s possible that the two were caught, carried 500′ and partially buried,” an accident summary from the UAC states. “The slide is estimated 2-4′ deep and 200′ wide, running 600′ down the slope on a northwest facing slope at 10,500′.”
