Fatal crash at ‘troubled’ Sandy City intersection sparks demands for change, community speaks out

SANDY CITY, Utah (ABC4) — An intersection near Alta High School where a fatal auto-pedestrian accident occurred on Thursday reportedly has a “troubled” history within the Sandy City community.

On Thursday, 44-year-old Joshua Perry died after being struck by a vehicle in the intersection of 11000 South and 1000 East near Alta High School in Sandy. The driver, later identified as Zoe Blankenstein, 55, was booked into the Salt Lake County Jail under suspicion of impaired driving.

Though the driver in Thursday’s incident was allegedly impaired, the intersection has been the site of several additional crashes in recent years, according to a statement from Sandy Police Department,

“On average we have recorded 10 crashes at 1000 E and 11000 S in the last 3 years. We had an officer enforcing traffic laws at that intersection as recently as this Tuesday, making several stops for traffic violations,” said Sergeant Michael Olsen of the Sandy Police Department. “The Sandy Police Department does empathize with the family who lost their loved one to the unfortunate crash on Thursday evening.”…
