Salt Lake Mayor raises red flags over potential ICE use of industrial building

SALT LAKE CITY (KUTV) — Reports have circulated that federal immigration authorities are exploring the use of a Salt Lake City property for a potential Immigration and Customs Enforcement detention facility.

City officials confirmed they have not been formally notified of a finalized proposal, but Salt Lake City Mayor Erin Mendenhall sent a letter on Jan. 15, 2026, to Ritchie Group principal Ryan Ritchie outlining zoning and infrastructure concerns tied to any high-occupancy or restricted-movement use of the site.

According to the mayor’s office, the letter was sent without confirmation of a specific parcel, but was based on media reporting of the proposed location and the Ritchie Group’s ownership of several industrial sites within that area.
