‘We will save a cell and a bed for you’: Woman arrested, planned to mail drug-infused paper to Utah inmates

SALT LAKE CITY (ABC4) — The Utah Department of Corrections (UDC) was able to stop a woman who allegedly planned to mail hundreds of sheets of “drug-infused paper” to inmates at Utah’s correctional facilities.

According to a press release from the UDC, Julie Rae Sawyer, a 48-year-old from Magna, has been booked into the Salt Lake County jail on two counts of felony distribution of a controlled substance and one count of possession with intent to distribute.

UDC says recent investments into technology, law enforcement professionals, and drug-sniffing K-9s were key to discovering and stopping the attempted distribution.

“UDC’s investment in law enforcement tools has paid off,” Jared Garcia, UDC’s Executive Director, is quoted in the release. “This arrest proves the value of our new surveillance technology in monitoring calls, detecting illegal substances, and holding those responsible accountable. Smuggling contraband is unacceptable, and this is evidence we are serious about stopping it.”…
