Much needed winter weather returns for the mountains with alerts in effect

SALT LAKE CITY (ABC4) — We are finally getting some mountain snow! Winter Weather Advisories are in effect for many of our mountains across the state for the first time in over a month.

The last time we saw any winter weather alert was back on the 9th of January. By the end of the month, we’d already broken into record low snowpack, and we’re still sitting at an all-time low.

The previous record low at this time of the year was 5.5 inches of snow-water equivalent (what you get when you melt snowpack into its liquid form), but so far this year we’re at a measly 5.0 inches.

Generally speaking, we have over 10 inches at this time of the year, putting this season’s snowpack at about half of the average. We’ve been hanging around the 5.0 inches mark for over 4 weeks.

This storm is forecasted to bring 6-12 inches to the Northern Mountains with the Upper Cottonwoods receiving up to 16 inches. Central Mountains could get 5-10 inches while the Southern Mountains see 2-5 inches, although we could see up to a foot locally around Brian Head and the Tushars…
