‘It shattered us’: Institutional failures in Utah nursing homes leads to death of Walmart greeter, lawsuit claims

CLEARFIELD, Utah (ABC4) — A Walmart greeter from Layton lost her life from an infection contracted at a skilled nursing facility. Her surviving family says an institutional problem is to blame.

On July 27, 2023, Tamara Bircumshaw, 66, better known as “Tammy,” tragically passed away due to complications from pressure sores and infections she contracted while rehabilitating from a hip injury at Rocky Mountain Care in Clearfield.

“Total neglect on their end is what ended up taking her,” Kenny Bircumshaw, Tammy’s son, told ABC4.com.

A workplace accident

“She got a back injury from work and ended up going to Seattle to get the back surgery done,” Kenny shared. “After getting the back fixed… it started to deteriorate on her hips, so she had to have her hips replaced.”

According to a lawsuit filed by the Bircumshaw family, Tammy was admitted to Rocky Mountain Care Clearfield on July 10, 2022, after she had hip surgery related to her workplace injury…
