Salt Lake County sheriff’s deputy charged with billing $75K for hours he didn’t work

SOUTH SALT LAKE — A Salt Lake County sheriff’s deputy has been charged with billing the department for nearly $75,000 of time he didn’t actually work.

John Leakona Green, 39, of Herriman, was charged Tuesday in 3rd District Court with theft by deception, a second-degree felony.

From Nov. 24, 2024, through Oct. 25, 2025, Green “submitted 1,350.25 hours of unverified work time, resulting in a financial loss to the sheriff’s office of approximately $74,290,” according to charging documents…
