SALT LAKE CITY (ABC4) — A gorilla infant was humanely euthanized at Utah’s Hogle Zoo after suffering injuries during a conflict within the gorilla troop.
Mary, a western lowland gorilla, gave birth on Wednesday. According to a press release from the zoo, following the birth of the gorilla on Feb. 25, a “troop conflict” occurred, resulting in the infant getting injured.
The care team quickly responded to assess the baby gorilla’s injuries. Unfortunately, due to the injuries, the care team made the “difficult but compassionate decision to humanely euthanize him.”
Utah’s Hogle Zoo stated that while conflict can occur in troops, “this was a highly unusual outcome. They noted gorilla troops are dynamic, and a birth can bring “rapid shifts within the group.”…
