An unsettled weekend with a series of storms headed to northern Utah

SALT LAKE CITY (ABC4) — Happy weekend, Utah! Our high pressure was short-lived, with unsettled conditions returning.

We warm up a few more degrees as we get into the weekend but will start to notice signs of moisture with increasing cloud coverage today and a few light showers in areas favored by a SW flow. Regardless, it’ll be a pleasant start to the weekend with daytime highs climbing into the low 60s for northern valleys, 50s for mountain valleys, mid to upper 60s in southern Utah valleys, and upper 70s to low 80s for Washington County.

The passing warm front bringing the warm weather on a SW flow will also bring the chance of some showers. We can’t rule out an evening shower today, but the wet weather potential increases as we head into Sunday. An upper-level low looks to flatten our ridge of high pressure and allow for some valley rain and mountain snow Sunday into Monday. Right now, you can expect isolated showers Sunday and more scattered showers to start the work week. Snow levels will remain high above 8,000 feet, so this will feel like a Spring storm. Temperatures will still be in the 50s and 60s into the workweek, even with the increased moisture.

The ridge of high pressure that has dominated our winter season does not appear over the next seven days. We have a more progressive pattern, and while warm, we see decent chances of precipitation. Following our Sunday-Monday storm, we are watching the potential of a late Wednesday into Thursday storm that looks to usher in some cooler air and another round of possible wet weather. Snow levels may begin to drop a bit more with this system on Thursday and allow for a wintry mix in some spots, but it’s still too early to have high confidence in that. A final storm in this series looks to arrive next weekend bringing the potential for widespread colder and more unsettled weather conditions statewide, but we will watch how the pattern evolves and keep you posted…
