Suspected gunman shot by off-duty UHP trooper during active shooter call faces multiple charges, including road rage

TAYLORSVILLE, Utah, March 2, 2026 (Gephardt Daily) — A 23-year-old man shot by an off-duty Utah Highway Patrol trooper during an active shooter call at a Taylorsville liquor store Thursday, February 26, is facing multiple felony charges, including road rage.

According to booking documents Tyler Traveon Mhaka alleged to have committed the following crimes:

  • Three counts of felony discharge of firearm causing serious bodily injury — road rage, a first-degree felony
  • Four counts of felony discharge of a firearm — road rage, a third-degree felony

The booking documents — filed by a Salt Lake City Police officer since Officer-Involved Critical Incident protocol requires an outside agency investigate when an officer is involved — says Mhaka “chased the male into the store while continuing to fire rounds from the firearm, striking the victim there times, firing seven rounds in total.
