City proposes green space for Fleet Block redevelopment

Salt Lake City unveiled concept designs this week for roughly 2.4 acres of open space as part of the Fleet Block redevelopment.

Why it matters: The proposal would add a welcome stretch of greenery to the emerging Granary District.

  • The designs feature an amphitheater lawn, walking loop, winding garden and curbless shared streets.

Catch up quick: The city-owned block, spanning 8.75 acres, once housed the city’s fleet vehicles for maintenance and repair. It became a memorial site and symbol of police brutality during the pandemic.

  • Activists painted pink portraits of people killed by police — including George Floyd and Breonna Taylor — on vacant buildings near where Bernardo Palacios-Carbajal was fatally shot in 2020 after fleeing officers.
  • The buildings were torn down last year to make way for long-planned redevelopment.
