Sugar House hotel backlash pushes Council votes on ICE water, Temple street closures into late hours.

A lengthy Salt Lake City Council meeting on Tuesday was dominated by debate on the zoning for a proposed hotel next to Sugar House Park and a streetcar extension into the Sugar House shopping center. The Council also approved water rationing orders, agreed to street closures for the upcoming LDS temple open house and heard pitches from local nonprofits for limited housing grants.

Multiple residents brought worries before the Council regarding a west-side warehouse that was recently purchased by Immigration and Customs Enforcement for use as a mega detention facility, and the removal of Cesar Chavez’s name from 500 South. The city also designated April 1 as Start by Believing Day to bring awareness to sexual violence.
