Salt Lake City ICE detention center purchase put on hold, reports say

SALT LAKE CITY (ABC4) — The $145.44 million Salt Lake City warehouse purchased by the Department of Homeland Security for use as an ICE detention center has been put on hold, reports say.

According to the Associated Press, all 11 contracts signed under former Homeland Security Secretary Kristi Noem are being reviewed— including the warehouse purchased in Utah.

Other warehouses under review are located in Arizona, Georgia, Maryland, Michigan, New Jersey, Pennsylvania, and Texas. All 11 purchases totaled a combined $1.074 billion.

Utahns rally against detention center

Last month, DHS bought a warehouse on a nearly 25-acre parcel of land located at 6020 West 300 South in Salt Lake City for $145.44 million, cash in hand.

“These will be very well-structured detention facilities meeting our regular detention standards,” DHS confirmed, adding that the ICE detention center will generate nearly 10,000 jobs in the area and contribute $1.1 billion to GDP…
