Violent threats against Utah judges raise questions about how cases reach prosecutors

SALT LAKE CITY — When a Utah judge at the heart of Utah’s redistricting case was targeted with threats last fall, the KSL Investigators began looking deeper at how often judges are threatened – and how those cases are handled.

Public records reveal a broader pattern: disturbing and sometimes violent threats against judges are not always formally reviewed for prosecution.

KSL Investigators reviewed records involving threats against the Third District Court over the past five years. Those cases are typically handled by the Salt Lake County Sheriff’s Office.
