Utah Highway Patrol cracks down on distracted driving with enforcement blitz

SALT LAKE CITY (ABC4) — Utah Highway Patrol is partnering with other agencies in Salt Lake and Utah Counties to begin a distracted driving enforcement blitz in the month of April.

April is distracted driving awareness month in Utah, and in that vein, Utah Highway Patrol (UHP), Utah Highway Safety, and Utah Department of Public Safety are kicking off an enforcement blitz focused on distracted driving. The enforcement blitz will last from April 6 to April 20.

On Monday, the effort involved approximately 25 officers from five different Utah county agencies: UHP, Utah County Sheriff’s Office, Orem Police Department, Lehi Police Department, and Provo Police Department, and they went out on I-15 to target distracted drivers.

Distracted driving involves texting or anything else happening inside a vehicle that can distract a driver while they are driving down the roadway, Captain Wade Breur with UHP said. “Manipulating electronic devices is the biggest one that we see.”…
