ATASCOSA — Back in the 1930s, Michael Adamek’s grandfather loaded produce into the back of his Ford Model T and drove to San Antonio’s Market Square to sell Constanzo Farms vegetables to H-E-B.
Once a week, he and other farmers would sit down at a coffee shop where an H-E-B buyer paid for their produce in cash. Nearly 100 years later, the deal between Constanzo Farms and H-E-B still exists.
“There’s no contracts,” said Adamek, a fourth-generation farmer. “It is a handshake.”
