Can music help mend a fractured nation? That’s the question behind American Revival, a traveling concert series headed to San Antonio’s Tobin Center on October 5. The live revue combines national headliners, local acts, and special guests in an attempt to spark community in each host city.
Filmmaker Nicholas Ma, Yo-Yo Ma’s son, created the roadshow after touring the U.S. with two documentaries: the Fred Rogers feature Won’t You Be My Neighbor? and Leap of Faith, a film about pastors trying to bridge differences. Inspired by the audiences’ responses, he set out to build an event that asks people to show up for others and themselves.
As the name implies, the experience is akin to a secular tent revival. Musical performances alternate with conversation about bringing people together in an age of divisiveness, and the night ends symbolically with every artist onstage at once…
