Iconic Texas steakhouse closes after nearly 60 years in business

San Antonio has lost another longtime dining landmark, adding to a recent wave of beloved restaurant closures across Texas. Hungry Farmer Steakhouse, a South Side fixture known for affordable steaks, chicken-fried steak and a room full of old-school Texas character, has closed after nearly six decades in business.

The closing came just days after co-founder Jack Roland Garrahan died at his San Antonio home on September 28 at age 86. His granddaughter, Madison Dunn, announced that the family was closing the restaurant, while the San Antonio Express-News reported that the longtime steakhouse had shut its doors.

Nearly six decades of family history

Garrahan founded Hungry Farmer with his wife, Verlene, and his brother Richard in 1967, according to local reporting.
