Bexar County Boosts Mental Health and Substance Abuse Treatment with $22 Million Pandemic Funds

In a significant move to combat the rising mental health and substance abuse issues exacerbated by the pandemic, Bexar County commissioners have approved a substantial investment. This week, they greenlit the allocation of $22 million in federal COVID-19 relief funds, aimed at expanding the county’s dual diagnosis treatment center.

The pandemic has left a lasting impact on communities nationwide, and Bexar County is no exception. The area has seen a worrying increase in mental health issues and substance abuse problems. To tackle these challenges, the county is utilizing a portion of the $389 million received under the American Rescue Plan Act. This strategic allocation of funds demonstrates the county’s commitment to addressing critical public health issues.

The investment will be channeled into the county’s facility located on Applewhite Road, in the southern part of the county. This center specializes in treating individuals grappling with both mental health and substance abuse issues. The planned enhancements include adding approximately 130 new treatment beds, significantly boosting the center’s capacity to help those in need.
