Texas drivers will no longer have to get vehicles inspected in 2025

Texas drivers will no longer be required to get their vehicles inspected annually starting on Wednesday, ending a longstanding practice aimed at ensuring vehicle safety.

Charissa Barnes, president of Texas Tag and Title and Official Inspection Station in San Antonio, expressed concern over the change. Her business was primarily focused on inspections.

“This is quite shocking and we had several law enforcement agencies that were there also to testify that this is going to make roads unsafe and could lead to additional deaths on the road,” Barnes said.

Inspectors catch issues like bad windshield wipers, low tires, faulty brakes, and burned-out bulbs, including turn signals and brake lights.

While inspections are no longer required, the state will still charge drivers $7.50 per vehicle annually during registration renewal. The fee, previously labeled the state inspection fee, will now be called the program replacement fee.
