Alameda Theater opened 76 years ago in San Antonio history

It once was the standard of Latino entertainment in San Antonio.

The Alameda Theater , an ornate movie palace that showcased Spanish-language films and live entertainment from some of the day’s top stars, held its grand opening on March 10, 1949.

The long-shuttered theater on West Houston Street closed in the 1980s, years after its heyday that saw Mexican superstars Cantinflas, Pedro Infante and María Félix grace its stage. Films from Mexico’s Golden Age of Cinema screened there, helping to make the Alameda the “cultural heart of the city’s Mexican American community for decades,” newspaper archives show …
