Memorial for 53 migrants left to die by smugglers in shipping container found vandalized

SAN ANTONIO – A memorial paying tribute to the 53 migrants who were left by human smugglers to die in a scorching shipping container has been found vandalized.

On Saturday morning, the memorial, comprised of 53 crosses, was found destroyed by Angelina Olvera, who has been taking care of the memorial since it was first erected after the tragedy on Quintana Road on the South Side.

“When I drove up and I’m like, ‘where are the crosses?’ And then when I see them on the ground, it just, I just started crying. I’m sorry,” said Olvera. “we’ve worked so hard to keep up with it, and then for just for somebody just to come and tear it down, like if a tornado came. I’m sorry.”…
