SAWS will still pay you to replace your grass, but it wants you to wait

For more than a decade, the San Antonio Water System has been offering coupons to encourage residents to replace their thirsty grass with more drought-tolerant plants.

Now the city-owned utility is taking it a step further: It’s offering a rebate to customers who remove their grass this spring but wait until the fall to put in the new plants.

Under a new pilot program called “Pause, Prep, Plant,” SAWS is trying to convince customers to hold off on planting until the worst of summer heat is behind them…
